About SAS Spine Arthroplasty Society (International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery) The Spine Arthroplasty Society (SAS) is an international society dedicated to all evolving spinal surgery advancements and associated downstream technologies. The initial focus has been on motion preservation technologies but has expanded to all minimally invasive spine procedures, robotics, imaging guidance, MEMS, and nanotechnology. Biological treatment of the spine is another major focus of SAS: growth factors, genetics, immunology, bone growth accelerators, and stem cell developments. A great deal has changed in the treatment of the spine over the past two decades. Spine surgeons and industries began to develop non-fusion and motion preservation technologies. The founding members of SAS asked the question, “What if a surgeon could treat the cause instead of treat the symptom?” The dedicated surgeons looking for answers developed SAS to encourage the great minds of the surgical world to gather together to share insights, knowledge and open discussion. Through sharing knowledge, we will be able to help the patient. Technology offers techniques that reverse degenerative disease without invasive surgery and without leading to later-stage degeneration. Technologies are being developed to re-stabilize the spine, re-normalize the movement associated with their related segments, and provide pain relief without major anatomic readjustment. While many of these technologies have been in existence for years, their importance is just now being understood around the world. Surgical techniques, training, education, thorough product pre-clinical testing, and comprehensive clinical testing continue to be critical to successfully ushering in a new era in spine surgery. The SAS was founded in response to the increasing trend toward specialization in spine arthroplasty and motion preservation. The mission of the society is to support the further development of highly innovative spine surgery and to provide an integrated and balanced view of research, diagnostics, and therapeutics that will enhance effective collaboration among specialists. The SAS is dedicated to advancing a major revolutionary step in spine surgery—restoring pain-free mobility. With the field of spine surgery changing so rapidly because of the myriad of new products and advancements, we believe it appropriate to provide a distinct voice to new techniques that may provide a significant change in the treatment and resolution of degenerative disc disease. Membership in SAS is extended to all spinal specialists, including government and industry, whose common cause is the advancement of spine surgery. Membership categories are as follows: Regular Membership:
